  Chromodoris
(?) sp. #6

Chromodoris(?) sp. #6
Maximum size:  9 mm.

Identification:  This species is translucent gray with opaque white flecks scattered irregularly over the mantle except along the margin where they become more concentrated. The body is uniformly covered with tiny gold-brown dots with some slightly larger dots along the mantle edge. The rhinophore clubs and gills are tan, tipped with white.

Natural history:  Chromodoris(?) sp. #6 is a rare species found under rubble in moderately protected locations from 11-15 m (35-50 ft). It lays a cream-colored egg mass.

Distribution:  Maui: also recorded from Papua New Guinea and Japan.

Taxonomic notes:  Although listed as "Noumea sp. 7" in Gosliner, et. al. (2008), the genus of this species has not been confirmed by dissection or DNA (Gosliner, pers. com.). So, we are leaving it in Chromodoris pending further work. It was first recorded from Hawaii off Makena, Maui by PF on March 30, 1991.
