Eocylichna braunsi (Yokoyama, 1920)
Maximum size: 10 mm
(extrapolated from shell length).
Identification:
This
species has an elongate, straight-sided shell with prominent
spiral striae and a strong columellar fold. In living animals, the
otherwise thin, golden-brown periostracum fills the striae giving the
shell a narrowly banded appearance. The animal is translucent cream.
Natural history:
Our
only two live Eocylichna braunsi
were found in sand samples taken in Halimeda
kanaloana beds at depths
of 10-20 m (33-55 ft). However, dead shells suggest that it's probably
a
moderately common burrowing species at such depths.
Distribution:
Maui: widely distributed in the western & central Pacific.
Taxonomic notes:
Shells
are present in various mixed lots at the Bishop Museum.
