Montereina(?)
rubra (Bergh, 1905)

Maximum size: 110 mm (Kay,
1979).
Identification:
This is a flattened, beige dorid blotched with light and dark violet
brown. It has small, widely scattered papillae tipped in dark brown
and circled with light rings.
Natural history:
Montereina(?) rubra
is a rare species known from only a few animals found in rocky
habitats at depths up to 16 m (52 ft). It lays a white egg mass.
Distribution:
Big Island, Oahu and Kauai: widely distributed in the western &
central
Pacific.
Taxonomic notes:
This is the species listed as Archidoris
hawaiiensis in Kay, 1979. It is also listed in many sources as Peltodoris rubra. It was first
reported in Hawaii from
Kaneohe Bay, Oahu in May, 1962 (Kay & Young, 1969).
