Oscilla pupu (Pilsbry, 1918)
Maximum size: 2.8 mm shell
length.
Identification:
This
species has a conical shell with three prominent, smooth
cords on each whorl. There is a single fold on the columella. The final whorl has six spiral cords. Animals
are
cream, blotched with gray.
Natural history:
Shells
of Oscilla pupu are
moderately common in beach drift. Live animals can be found
occasionally in tide pools and shallow rocky habitats.
Distribution:
Maui, Oahu, French Frigate Shoals and Midway: widely distributed in the
Indo-Pacific.
Taxonomic notes: This species is listed in Kay, 1979 as Hinemoa indica. However, the more elongate shells lumped with the species by Kay are probably a different species (possibly in the genus Cingulina) and the shell illustrated in Fig. 32 is of the latter form.
