Turbonilla varicosa

Maximum size:
23 mm shell
length (Severns, 2000).
Identification:
The
shell of this species is slender with granular axial
ribs and
randomly distributed enlarged varices. There are
fine spiral striae
between the ribs. It varies from white to light
brown. The animal is
cream with white flecks.
Natural history:
Shells
of Turbonilla
varicosa
are moderately rare in beach drift. Live animals are
occasionally found in sand samples from Halimeda kanaloana
beds taken at
depths of around 10-20 m (33-66 ft). Kay (1979)
lists a depth range of
8-100 m (26-328 ft) for the species.
Distribution:
Maui,
Oahu, French Frigate Shoals and Midway: widely
distributed in the western and central
Pacific.
Taxonomic notes: This species is listed in Kay, 1979 as Turbonilla cornelliana. It's probably also listed in Severns, 2011 as Turbonilla bella Dall & Bartsch, 1906 (in our opinion, the illustrated shell falls within the range of variation of young T. varicosa).
