Unidentified Haminoeid #5

Maximum size: 2 mm (excluding
"tail").
Identification:
This
species
is similar to unidentified
haminoeid #2 but has dense white and dark brown rosettes showing
through the shell in contrast to the lacier white rosettes and brown
"lightning bolts" characteristic of that species. It also has a more
deeply arched posterior margin on its head shield. In some animals, the
rosettes may be less well-defined and more compact. The head shield can be folded into various postures and the "tail" is highly
contractile.
Natural history:
Unidentified
haminoeid #5 is known from three animals. The first was found in a Halimeda kanaloana bed at 5-21 m
(16-69 ft). The second was found on sand at about 3 m (10 ft). The third was found on sand at about 8 m (26 ft).
Distribution:
Maui and Oahu: also known from southern Japan.
Taxonomic notes:
It was first
recorded
in Hawaii from the scenic lookout west of McGregor
Point,
Maui by CP on Oct. 3, 2007. There's some uncertainty in lumping the two
animals but Japanese animals show a similar range of variation.
