The family Cylichnidae
(listed as Scaphandridae in some sources) includes mostly burrowing
species with well calcified shells. A spire
may be present or absent and most can withdraw completely into their
shells. They may feed on several different taxa including
foraminiferans, crustaceans, polychaete worms and other mollusks. At
least 16 species are known from Hawaii in five genera (Acteocina, Cylichna, Eocylichna, Roxania (perhaps) and Scaphander). However, only
seven species in the genera Acteocina,
Cylichna and Eocylichna are likely to be
seen at scuba depths.
