live animal?

Dolabrifera sp. #1

Maximum size: 2 mm shell
length.
Identification:
The
shells of this species are flattened and plate-like
with broad, radiating white bands. They're somewhat variable in width.
Natural history:
Dolabrifera sp. #1
is known only from a handful of
shells found in beach drift from moderately exposed to
exposed sites. (Note 1)
Distribution:
Maui and Midway.
Taxonomic notes:
Carlo Cunha (pers. com.) suggested that these shells are probably from a second, smaller species of Dolabrifera. Phyllaplysia and Petalifera might also be possible IDs.
Photo: CP:
composite photo, same shell; 1.7 mm; narrow: beach drift; Mokuleia
Bay, Maui; fall, 1985.
Observations and comments:
Note
1: A possible live animal was photographed by Bob Nguyen in 2025. It's overall appearance seems a bit "odd" for Dolabrifera dolabrifera.
But, given the wide variation in that species, it's uncertain whether or not it belongs with these shells... The
siphons are more closely spaced than in typical specimens of Dolabrifera dolabrifera. However, that could be a matter of posture...
